Last year July I was walking downtown and I came across this environmental work of art. It really is a construction site made into art.

Usually  construction sites are caged in by royal blue crates with ‘no- post’ signs stamped on them to avoid graffiti artist from posting their tags or to persuade people from posting  posters.

This construction site however, contained neither. This site attracted the local artist. I can’t say that it attracted everyone because not everyone stopped to admire Maya Barkai’s work.

The piece of work is called Walking Men 99 and it contains photographs of 99 pedestrian traffic lights from cities around the world.

Of all the ones that  I saw, Jakarta really stuck out to me. Instead of having a man walking their walking signal is the handicap symbol. I thought, that’s so considerate.

The most cool walking signal is  Berlin’s. Their man has a hat on!
