Mary Mitchell Wall

Today a little boy said to me: My name is Knowledge and I am going to the second grade.

When he said this to me, I remembered the graffiti on the wall at the Mary Mitchell Center.

My favorite one is this one. He wrote ‘KNOW’ short for Knowledge.

The Walls at Mary Mitchell

Last month a few graffiti artist came to the Mary Mitchell Center to redo the walls.

As always the children were excited to meet them. This artist is from Germany. He told me the children at the center/ New York are better behaved than the kids in Germany. He said in Germany when children see you painting the walls they pick up your spray cans and mess up your art….maybe the kids in the Bronx appreciate the work a little more??

The inner city Lady Painter

The Lady Painter

Among men of the world

Among spray cans

She climbs her ladder

Among vibrant colors

Among tag-ups

She continues to climb

She take one rung at a time

Her paint brush is ready

Paint in one hand

Bush in other

She creates a Woman raising above

Among men art

Among men at art

Is the inner city lady painter

The inner city vibrant women

Un-finished

Undone

The community has yet to see

What kind of woman the shape will form

But the inner city Lady Painter knows

It’s time to celebrate the inner city women
