Movie Directors

Movie Makers

I took this photo at Barnes and Noble. Each book  contain interviews of Film Makers in America. Only one is African- American. The book is on the second shelf at the far right. It’s Spike Lee. Only one is Japanese. Its Akira Kurosawa, the book right next to Spike Lee’s book.

Is this really America?

I lost my Doll in East Tremont

East Tremont

I lost my doll in East Tremont. Her name is Molly. I lost my doll in East Tremont getting off the Trolley. My mommy was in a hurry and Molly wouldn’t hold my hand. I wanted to go back to get her but Mommy said ‘come on!” I lost poor Molly in East Tremont. She has brown hair and a purple backpack. Some people call her Dora the Explorer but I just call her Molly. She told me she wanted to go on a new adventure which is probably why I lost her; she doesn’t know that I put a ‘lost and found’ tag in her backpack. So, if you find Molly in East Tremont please tell her, that I said ‘her adventure is over’ and send her back to me.

A Photographer

from one county

photographs

A child

from every country

on Earth

All in one City.

In New York City.

Inspired by People

And their stories.

Inspiring people

Especially in America

more so in New York

to talk to their neighbors

and to learn their stories.

Danny Goldfield was recently at the International Center of Photography and I got a chance to meet him and some of the children that he photographed for this project. I think it is important for Americans in America to meet and greet each other more often so that we will understand people’s backgrounds and their American story. The book is like a geography book with stunning  pictures of children from every perspective. A few of the countries listed in the book I have never heard of. I think every student should be assigned to look at the book. After all, it is about America. Your Community in America.

Bruttima Buoni

I recently went to Gustiamo and had lunch

I had

Pasta with Faella (from the South of Italy)

Fresh Arugula (also known as Rucula or Spicy Rocket) with Olive Oil

Carnaroli (a type of rice good for Risotto) mixed with dried mushrooms and leaks (onions) and thyme

Fresh Ricotta Cheese with Parsley and Black pepper

Water

And Hazel Nut Cookies named Bruttima Buoni which means ‘ugly but good’ (the shape of the cookies were weird-looking but tasted good)

I look forward to going there again!

Lunch at Gustiamo

Gustiamo & The Community

Did you know that smack in the middle of the Bronx exists the famous Gustiamo, Inc.?

It was founded by native Italians who missed the good cooking from their home country and thought why not treat New Yorkers with healthy, pure Italian food?

In the year 2000 the owners Beatrice and Martina got together and opened up Gustiamo. The business has been growing ever since. Gustiamo is special and unique because their food is ordered from small farms in Italy, many of which are family owned. Many of the farmers make it their priority to keep food that is endanger  ‘alive’ and eaten.

Gustiamo is not only making a profit  in the neighborhood but also reaching out to the community. With the help of the organization, Slow Food International, Gustiamo reaches out to the youth in the Wild Life Conservancy School. This organization teaches the students the importance of slow food (as opposed to fast food)  and the importance of cultivating food. It helps children to be aware and concerned of what is going into their bodies and what is being sold in the community.

In many New York neighborhoods, especially in the Bronx, it is not easy to eat healthy. It has to be first a willing mind but with businesses like Gustiamo located at 1715 West Farms Road it is not impossible.

Gustiamo believes that eating properly is a  birthright and shares this philosophy with Slow Food International  whose message to the world is everyone has a fundamental right to the pleasure of good food and consequently the responsibility to protect the heritage of food, tradition and culture that make this pleasure possible.

In order for everyone to eat healthy it must first be taught and the community can thank Gustiamo for looking out for their well-being.

Brothers

From the Same Womb

Not half, not Step

We are real brothers

Our Family Tree says so

Our blood says so

Our parents says so

Not half, not step

But we are real Brothers

I am the youngest

I am often the cutest

I am often pampered

I look up to my Brother

He is kind, even though he sometimes don’t like to share

He let’s me play his games

And hang out with him and his friends

And eat some of his candy

He explains the world to me when I am confused

My mom tells him

‘You better treat your brother right!’

When he is mad at me

And my mom tells me

‘He loves you’

When I am mad at him

And all of this and more comes with being

BROTHERS.
