A Wood Sofa?

I thought this was pretty crafty, cunning and cool. I would want something like this in my room. A wood Sofa.

It appears to be hard wood but is actually squishy printed polyurethane.

I first saw it in  New York. It’s also on the web at

It goes for 7,380 at Moroso.

Stairs

I like the use of stairs in photographs. That ascending or descending backdrop adds some type of flavor to the photo. What really makes the picture interesting is where the photographer chooses to place the subject.

One photo from Diane Von Furstenberg’s newsletter encouraged me to blog about the use of stairs in pictures.  In the  photo, the stairs look like they are a prop; nevertheless, help to enforce the designs on the girls dresses.

I realize that with stairs you have to be careful. It’s almost like using a wall. You have to like the color of the stairs the shape of the stairs and even the width.

Which leads me to talk about pictures from Michael Kors’ newsletters. In a few of his pictures, cement stairs are used. These stairs are not used as a prop even though they are in-sync with the model clothes.  The photographer gives the viewer the idea that the stairs are an after thought.  The model is walking pass the stairs as oppose to sitting on them. The stairs also seem like they are never-ending, almost like stairs in front of the Metropolitan museum or a court-house.

The Michael Kors’ pictures are different in that it almost tells a story. Unlike Diane Von Furstenberg’s models who are sitting down posing for the picture, Michael Kors’ model is walking with books in her hand while looking at a phone.

Michael Kors’ picture is similar to Kate Spade picture of Bryce Dallas Howard. Both subjects are doing something; however, in the Kate Spade picture, Howard is more laid back. She is having fun. The use of the stairs is more for a prop. It’s needed to bring the fun photo to justice. Howard is not just passing by a staircase, she’s hanging on the rail.

Stairs are source of inspiration and make photos more fun.

99 Men Walking

Last year July I was walking downtown and I came across this environmental work of art. It really is a construction site made into art.

Usually  construction sites are caged in by royal blue crates with ‘no- post’ signs stamped on them to avoid graffiti artist from posting their tags or to persuade people from posting  posters.

This construction site however, contained neither. This site attracted the local artist. I can’t say that it attracted everyone because not everyone stopped to admire Maya Barkai’s work.

The piece of work is called Walking Men 99 and it contains photographs of 99 pedestrian traffic lights from cities around the world.

Of all the ones that  I saw, Jakarta really stuck out to me. Instead of having a man walking their walking signal is the handicap symbol. I thought, that’s so considerate.

The most cool walking signal is  Berlin’s. Their man has a hat on!

99 Men Walking

This is the sign that I read about the art work.

“Walking Men 99 artist Maya Barkai joins together photographs of 99 pedestrian traffic light icons from cities around the world.”

“Driven from the vocabulary of urban circulation and metropolitan life, the “walking man” figures is an international symbol which appears in various forms in cities worldwide transcending all cultures and languages.”

The three Wise Men

After President Obama won the election, I begin to see a lot of  pictures of him in stores (mainly bodegas).  I thought this was something to photograph and still think it is something to photograph.

I can not remember seeing pictures of presidents in the corner stores since I’ve been living in New York.

This store has a black and white photo of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, President Obama, and Malcolm X.

Erick

I’ve always wondered who are some of these people painted on walls around New York? What was their personality like? What did they do to help the community? What does it mean to be memorized in such away? Would I want a painting of me on the side of a building?

It does sound kind of cool…your profile on the side of a building in New York City.

Many people claim that most of the people painted on walls were drug dealers. Is that really true?

Another thing, these paintings are well-kept. Who ever does the art work must retouch it constantly.

Sometimes the painting is up there for a while before it is erased and a new face fills the spot.

I rarely see a woman face or a child’s face. It’s usually a man’s face.

Why should the community feel good about Erick?
