Cornell
This is Cornell. Look at his outfit.
He told me he is originally from North Carolina.
He came to New York in 1962 after he got into a little trouble. He lived upstate for a while…I automatically thought jail because of the way he said it: They sent me upstate and when I got out my Mom helped me get a small place in the Bronx. Now I live in Harlem.
Kennedy Fried Chicken and Pizza
Only when I am very hungry and have no other food choices to make, do I go to chicken joints. The food is so greasy and pre-cooked, there is no way I can crave for it. Their prices are low which is probably why they stay in the neighborhood. If people would just make healthier choices, then maybe there would be better quality restaurants in our neighborhoods.
Funny, all of sudden the government is concern about our health. Telling people to work-out and bashing fast foods, yet, every time I go into a poor neighborhood, I see the same thing: Chinese restaurants, chicken joints and pizza shops galore. Papa John’s and Little Caesars seem the same. I don’t understand the argument. Is one really better than the other? Why can’t the government put their money where their mouths are and put healthy restaurants with low prices in poor neighborhoods?
The Family Health Challenge
This picture is of a bag made especially for the Mary Mitchell Center. This bag is used to package the food that the center gives out weekly.
Printed on the back of the bag includes a list of what the children did each week as participants of the Challenge. It reads like this:
- Drink water (not sugary drinks).
- Eat three fresh fruits every day.
- Eat more vegetables.
- Eat whole grains (not processed food).
- Exercise everyday.
- Eat small portions of meat and grains.
- Don’t eat take-out, cook food at home.
- Watch less t.v/ computer/video.
- Play outside at a park or garden.
- Volunteer to help your neighborhood.
