Cornell

This is Cornell. Look at his outfit.

He told me he is originally from North Carolina.

He came to New York in 1962 after he got into a little trouble. He lived upstate for a while…I automatically thought jail because of the way he said it: They sent me upstate and when I got out my Mom helped me get a small place in the Bronx. Now I live in Harlem.

Little Mike

This is Mike.

When the train pulled into the station, he was already smiling. It was his smile that made me put the camera to my face.

I am glad I did because when I got on the train, I met his mom, Delphine, who was a beautiful person.  I am cautious of taking photos of children but she didn’t mind.

When I told Mike I was going to put his picture on my blog, he got really excited.

So, here he is, Mike.

Madea & Son

I love this photo. I wish I could post it all over my neighborhood. A parent reading to her child. I have a student who is in Kindergarten. He is so far behind. Since the beginning of the year, I have been talking to his mom about his level. He doesn’t have a learning disability. It seems no one reads with him or to him at home. Do his mom understand or just don’t care??

Leeritha, Leela, Laresa

Aren’t they adorable?

Notice the color coordination of Laresa’s (the 12-year-old) outfit. You can’t see what’s under her coat but one can tell she has her mother’s eye for style -even with a coat on…unless her mom dressed her. But I kinda doubt that. It seems if you were born in Philly, you came out knowing how to dress.
