Mother and Son: Carole Boston Weatherford and her son, Jeffery
I was blessed to meet Carole Boston Weatherford and her son, Jeffery Boston Weatherford at the African- American children’s book fair.
First I met Jeffrey Boston Weatherford and he told me about his debut book ( he is the illustrator and his mother is the author), You can Fly: The Tuskegee Airmen.
Then, I met his mother, Carole Boston Weatherford. I didn’t realize that I met a genius until I sat down and read some of her work. I really appreciate the time and labor she put towards writing children books.
During a meeting with the students at Mary Mitchell, I showed them all the books I bought written by her and they gasped.
oh my gosh! She wrote so many books!!
I was able to talk to my students about my favorite photographer, Gordon Parks, through the use of her book, Gordon Parks: How the Photographer Captured White and Black America.
Most of the students were familiar with Freedom on the Menu and those who weren’t were more interested in that book than any of the other books I purchased by her.
I am happy I met them and can’t wait to see what this pair put out next!
Rice & Rocks by Sandra Richards
.Today I brought all the books I bought at the book fair into the classroom.
Pick a book to read. I told them.
Something about a book begin new and signed by the authors made the children really excited.
Dominic looked at all the books and picked Rice and Rocks. He saw there quietly, reading and turning each page slowly.
When he was done, he looked up at me and said in a slow and emotional way,
Ms. Lilly, I really liked this book.
He sat there thinking and I didn’t interrupt. But now, I want to know what exactly he was thinking about. Maybe tomorrow I will ask him why he liked the book.

Mr. and Mrs. Fox
I met Mr. Fox a Saturday ago. He was the bus driver who took my students to Philadelphia.
He pulled the long bus in front of the center right on time.
The parents, students and staff got excited when they saw the bus. It made going to Philadelphia a dream come true!
The bus is here!! One person called out and that created an even greater excitement.
The news ignited the crowd. I walked downstairs to check on the volunteers who were making sandwiches. I could hear the children upstairs talking excitedly about the big, big bus out side. Their feet running to look out the door.
I went upstairs to where everyone was waiting and addressed the crow: Mary Mitchell!!
Here we are!! They responded.
Good Morning and thanks for coming! As you already know, the bus is outside! By the time my speech was over, everyone stood up and began to aboard the bus.
When I walked on the bus, Mr. Fox turned to me and said, “So, you are the lady in charge.”
“Yes. I am.” I responded.
“What you got planed for today?”
This began our relationship and set the tone for our trip. His wife, Mrs. Fox was there and assisted me almost like a mother assists a daughter. Never in the way, encouraging and there for support.
Needless to say, we had a safe and very successful trip.
I can’t wait to use Entertainment Express again!

African American Children’s Book Fair
Two weeks ago, some Mary Mitchell Students traveled from the Bronx to Philadelphia Pennsylvania to attend their annual African American Book Fair. It was a dream come true for me. My first self lead trip out of state with my students. It was a great success (If I may say so myself).
In this photo are some Mary Mitchell students with Author Vaunda Micheaux Nelson and Illustrator R. Gregory Christie.
Ms. Nelson is penning a sheriff badge on Jerome. He had just told me that he didn’t want any books. That was before he met Ms. Nelson. She changed his mind. He ended up getting Bad News for Outlaws (written by Ms. Nelson and Illustrated by Mr. Christie).

Yesterday was a nice day. The temperature was 65 degrees! The children were outside in shorts and tee shirts in the back yard. However, in the front of the building, the janitor was placing down salt for the snow storm promised to hit the following day…
