Sensei Tony

Tony&Lilly

Hi Tony! Sensei Will was telling me you grew up in North Carolina.

Yeah, I did.

He told me a little bit about your past and the racism that you had to endure with as a child. He said something about how you were tied to a tree?

Yes. I was. That happen when I was a little boy. I was only in the third grade. I remember it like yesterday. What happened was, it was Valentine’s Day. All the kids brought in candies and gifts. We had a little party. A little white girl gave me some heart  shape candy and kissed me on the cheek. You know that colorful candy with words on it shaped like a heart? Well, we had that candy back in the days too!

Anyways, when it was time to go home boys, around my age and a little older, followed me and my brother taunting us along the way. Telling us we shouldn’t be liking any white girls and things of that sort. They beat us up and then proceeded to drag us into the woods. Next, they tied us to a tree telling us they were going to leave us there for the bears to get us. We as children were terrified. It began to get dark and we were still there. Then, I saw the bushes move and that’s when I began to struggle a little more to get unloose.

Finally, the rope came unloose and I untied my brother. We first had to find our way out of the woods being that it was night-time. When we got home, the base (we lived on an army base) was filled with cops and others looking for us. When we told them what happened, nothing was done to punish the boys who taunted us.

Tony is a Martial Arts instructor at the Mary Mitchell Center. He shared his story about growing up in the south with the Mary Mitchell family.

The Mary Mitchell Center

We were about to the have a staff party and one of the teachers brought this bowl out intending to fill it with liquor but I saw a reflection of the Mary Mitchell Center.

The People John Knows

So, last month I was raising money for the Mary Mitchell Center and it tuns out I went into a contractor’s office and on the wall were a lot of famous people he had met in his life time. I knew most of them by face and not really by name. Some by name like Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. There are also some actors who acted with Bill Cosby but I can’t recall their names. For some reason it was surprising and I was hyped (not even going to lie).

You know what’s funny, now it doesn’t even matter. Like, it’s not like I met them. Then why was I so hyped?!

Mary Mitchell Wall

Today a little boy said to me: My name is Knowledge and I am going to the second grade.

When he said this to me, I remembered the graffiti on the wall at the Mary Mitchell Center.

My favorite one is this one. He wrote ‘KNOW’ short for Knowledge.

Morise

Can you believe she is a grandmother?!

They seem to be getting younger and younger.

This is Jaylin’s grandma (the little girl who I spoke about who won the most creative award at the Mary Mitchell Center).

I love the color of her top and her hair! She’s just a beautiful woman.

Jaliyn’s Outfit

Of all the children at Mary Mitchell, Jaylin was the only one who made her outfit. From head to toe she created her outfit (with a lot of help from her mom).

The following photos are close up pictures of her outfit.

Jaylin’s Outfit- Shoes

Okay, lets start with her sneakers. There are studs around the soles and the shoe laces are tulle.

Also, the dots and the hearts were added on the Converse.

Tulle? Really? For shoe laces? It’s awesome.

(There is more tulle on the heel of the sneakers)

Jaylin’s Outfit- Tights/ Skirt

She has two pairs of  tights on- the black ones are ripped intentionally.

Then, her skirt- that spider design fabric is actually added on to the skirt. When she walked down the ‘runway’, she had a lot of fun spinning around.

I think that black and white piece on the top was also added.
