In Celebration of a Great Work
Along with the Mary Mitchell Family and Youth Center, I am preparing for the long, historical, event-filled weekend (it’s Martin Luther King Jr.’s day on Monday. Saturday is National Volunteer Day and to top things off President Obama will be sworn in for a second term).
For starters, tomorrow, Mary Mitchell will be hosting a celebration of Dr. King with the children by simply helping the children to understand the importance of what Dr. King did for the American people. I hope the children look at Dr. King as a man who did something they can all do- dedicate their time and love to their community, state, and country and even the world. (Do you know Martin Luther King Jr. is the only lay person in American History to actually get a national holiday?)
Some, as children, learn about Dr. King really young but not all understand that he was not great because his name was King or because he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth but he was great because he did the work that God called him to do and put his entire heart into his work. If only more people would work more diligently, perhaps our communities would be a little better.
I was listening to an old recording of my deceased apostle, Bishop Goodwin, and he said: Paul told Timothy, stir up the gift that is in you…[if] you want the Victory, stir up the gift.”
In other words, whatever that is good, that God is calling you to do- do it and do it well. You may be a child and your duty may be to go to school. Don’t go to school and be a disappointment to your parents. Be the best student you can be…Whatever it is that you are on this earth to do- whatever that is good- do it and do it well.

About 4 to 5 years ago, someone I knew took a picture with this young man. And coming out of Juniors tonight I seen him once again doing the same thing What a kawinkydink… He is usually around and or between 42 and 34 street downtown Manhattan. (And he talks if you talk to him, not a total mime yet. Also obviously he is around the tourist and crowed areas. He has to make that money like everyone else.) People when you see other people trying to make a living with various odd legal and reasonable jobs such as this young man or selling legal goods on the street. Please don’t look down on them because you don’t know what you may have to do when it is all said and done. You may not have money or food for them if they are asking for that, but a “how your doing”, “nice work”, or “good job” goes a long way even on a bad day.

Neil’s Cafe
My family recently went to Neil’s Cafe,which is run by one of my close friends from college, mother, Andrea Neil. It is located in New Rochelle, New York at 534 North Ave across the street from City Hall.
Whether you are near or far, a visit to Neil’s Cafe is totally worth a visit! It’s a small and homely restaurant that serves Caribbean and Southern dinners. Family Time
This picture was originally taken by the children’s grandma, Lisa Diggs. I am working on a project for her and she showed me some of her family pictures. Out of all of them, this was my favorite. I changed it a little to my liking. It reminds me of the late photographer, Helen Levitt, who photographed Children.

I was on the train when a lady got on and sat across from me with a brand new camera. She was excited about her camera. She looked at me for a while and kept looking at her camera, then she began to take photos of me.
I couldn’t get mad because she was doing to me what I do to others all of the time. At first I didn’t know she was taking my photo but I had a hunch. Then, I started to smile at her because I knew she was taking my picture.
She showed me her new Olympus camera and the photos. We swapped emails and she emailed me the photos that night.
Andre
So, my family went to Washington, DC over the Thanksgiving break and I got to see so much of my family. It was pretty exciting. Pictured here is my second cousin, Andre, who is a pianist, singer and so many other fun things; like, now he owns Moody’s Barber Shop in Gloucester, VA. and has his own beautiful family.
I’m blogging about him because of the scarf he has around his neck. He had that scarf when I was a little girl. It looks like he just bought it. It was kept well. In addition to his scarf, I liked his casual outfit. It was put together well. His style reminds me of James McBride, the author of The Color of Water,who I blogged about a while ago.
I wonder what’s going to be my staple when I get older. I can’t name one accessory that I have that I wear all the time…maybe it’s because I’m a female? At least I know my signature look will include a hat.
Dr. Naison & Liz
In celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday I thought I’ll blog about Dr. Naison and his lovely wife who have been married for over 30 years. If family is not one of the main things to be thankful for, what is? By looking at this photo one can tell that they are still happy with one another. It was satisfying to be around them too. They are very down to earth and warm people.
Dr. Naison is the head of the African-American Studies Department at Fordham University and while I was in school, I took his class titled, From Rock and Roll to Hip-Hop.
I learned so much in that class. It was the only class I was able to talk in dept about the music I listen to…and I was a music major. In addition to it being the only class that allowed me to express my love of Gospel music, it was not (and still isn’t) considered a music class at Fordham.
Every time I think about how Fordham doesn’t include music classes that talk about music besides Classical and Jazz, it really annoys me. I tried talking to the Music department but nothing was changed. How Fordham University is going to be in the heart of the Bronx (where Hip-Hop music was born) and doesn’t include Hip-Hop music in its course selection?!
