Torria & Therese

Therese & Torria

This is a picture of two of my good friends. Torria, whom I love dearly. I love to just sit and talk to her. Her advice is always valuable. And the other is  Therese who finally came to church! If you go back on my blog to last year May 2013 you will see us when we first met at the museum. We’ve been close friends ever since.

Jamel & Melina

Jamal & Melina Lilly

I met Jamel and his beautiful daughter, Melina Lilly, at the 33rd Annual Making Brooklyn Bloom event and I was a bit curious to know if Jamel was a gardener too. And guess what? He is.

The reason I was curious is I don’t met much African American young men in my neighborhood who run a garden or help others learn about the importance of gardening. Now, I am not saying that they don’t. Maybe they go else where to garden.

When I told Jamel that I wanted to blog about him, (I don’t think he knew that I was going to write about him) he told me that he also blogged. I visited it and was impressed. He is apart of an organization that help mold youth into leaders using the environment as their foundation.

Jamel clearly cares about his community and the future of it, his concern shows through his work and his personality.

I wonder how Jamel got into gardening and how effective his organization may be. Perhaps teaching youth how to grow their own food can put an end to some of the inner city trouble many like to speak about.

Church Family- Literally!

Church Family

So, when my family went down to Virginia we went to church- of course!

Going to church made my Birthday all the better (my birthday happened to be the day after Thanksgiving).

But I’m not blogging about my Birthday. I’m blogging about the fact that everyone who was at church was literally related to me- from the pulpit to the door.

At the church I attend in New York, everyone is not related to me; so going to church in Virginia and worshiping with family only seemed like a once in a life time experience.

In this picture is my family and all who attended service that night.

Oh, and before I end, to top off having a good birthday, the preacher- my cousin, preached a message using Isaiah 40 which is the exact scripture I’ve been dwelling on since the summer.

Isn’t Jesus good?

On the Deck

on the deck

Ezekiel, Me, Sphie-Joy and Freida on the deck. It was cold and raining. It didn’t help that I had a new camera and am still learning how to use it. However, this photo didn’t come out that bad.

12345 Chocolate

Chocolate or what?

One of my students came to me really excited:

Miss Lilly, you want some chocolate?

Yeah, why not.

She then pulled this piece of chocolate -so I thought- out of her pocket. It was really a calculator. It was wrapped in tin foil and smelled like a chocolate bar. Only, it was not edible. It was a calculator.

She bought it from the book fair.

I was on the train when a lady got on and sat across from me with a brand new camera. She was excited about her camera. She looked at me for a while and kept looking at her camera, then she began to take photos of me.

I couldn’t get mad because she was doing to me what I do to others all of the time.  At first I didn’t know she was taking my photo but I had a hunch. Then, I started to smile at her because I knew she was taking my picture.

She showed me her new Olympus camera and the photos. We swapped emails and she emailed me the photos that night.
